But this was fortunately just the Peace Corps, not an execution (and these days you could probably have shown a bootleg copy of Jaws to the locals and your fellow volunteers on your iPad upon arrival).

Love that you took Spielberg to task on some gaps in logic, too! Holiday roast in July, indeed...

Speaking of sharks, though, aren't they rather vicious off of Half Moon Bay? That area has always seemed particularly frightening to me: relatively cold Pacific water, huge waves, and (I thought) Great Whites.Danielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05222052132452709301noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5929352816561809263.post-46214889491453358572010-12-19T16:22:43.211-05:002010-12-19T16:22:43.211-05:00Jason - thanks for the comment. Once the action starts, I love Spielberg’s fast cuts, especially his fast cuts to objects doing their thing: barrels flying; cables snapping; scuba diving tanks clattering to the deck; the engine exploding; the pieces of the shark cage being assembled ...
The Orca delivers the best performance by a boat. ... I was really excited about your blogathon and so I was glad I had time to come up with something. That's intriguing because Independence is one of the few Huston films I haven't seen--I was hoping somebody would write about it for my Huston blogathon back in August, to no avail.

But man, if I ever do ship off to the Peace Corps, Jaws would be a fantastic choice for one of the last movies to watch. Even if you've already seen it! Some people think Jaws loses steam once you become more familiar with it and know what to expect, but I find that it enriches with repeated viewings. I'm planning my own piece on the film, but I'm so happy to read recollections from those who were there during its release. I envy you! The portrayal of Quint extents to hyperbole, but he is a memorable character. There are elements of hyperbole about Ahab as well. I guess if Melville had written this, the shark would gobble up all three of them. I taught Jaws for the first time last year, and it does hold up extremely well (a blend of the commercial and the artistic that reminds me of Psycho). I also felt a little oppressed by the big battle at the end, a hint of many blockbusters to come. I was also struck by the humor of the movie, especially the scene where Brody mopes as his son imitates him. There's also a sense that old-fashioned Hemingwayesque masculinity has to be devoured. I wonder what Melville would have thought of the ending. The Film Doctor https://www.blogger.com/profile/03073505923746994988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5929352816561809263.post-75408912472219866922010-12-17T08:29:34.912-05:002010-12-17T08:29:34.912-05:00Jane - This is a classic. But did you know that the soundtrack comes from Dvorak's Symphony #9, aka The New World? I believe it is the beginning of the fourth movement.
